Environment
A healthy environment promotes vibrant communities which is why NIRCC is dedicated to assisting our member communities with maintaining and/or improving their natural environment. NIRCC assists communities achieve their environmental goals by ensuring transportation projects conform to established air quality emission standards, producing red flag reports prior to road projects being completed to identify potential environmental risks, and working to improve water quality in NE Indiana’s open waters. This is being accomplished through the following methods below..
Transportation conformity was established for the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) and the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) adopted by NIRCC’s Urban Transportation Advisory Board, the MPO policy board for the Fort Wayne Urbanized area.

Red FlagRed Flag Investigations (RFIs) occur during or before the project development phase to see what kinds of environmental effects may be caused as a result. In order to identify locations and issues of concern, or “red flags”, an initial report is completed and referred to as a Red Flag Investigation. The report identifies these red flags that may require additional study coordination in future steps of the project development process and also identifies any “fatal flaws” in the study area which are locations that must be avoided all together.

Water QualityNortheast Indiana is water rich with 100s of lakes created by the last great glaciation and 100s of miles of flowing water. Ensuring high water quality within our water resources will increase our community’s livability, vitality, and boost economic growth of our region as well as increase access to available outdoor recreation including boating, paddle sports, and fishing.
